(Luke.5:17-26)

It was a specific day and the power of God was present among the people who came to hear Christ preached the word of God. Every- where He went, the Spirit of God was always present to do mighty miracles, signs and wonders, but this day was different. The Spirit of the Lord was heightened for some reason unknown to us. The dignitaries of the religious and political leaders were sitting there, waiting to hear Christ for themselves.

They were the doctors of the Law, Pharisees, Sadducees, lawyers, who was who of the Israelites upper circles and the general populace were there.

They came from every corner of Israel, and the crowd was teaming with anticipation and excitement. Electricity and the fire of God were in that house so to speak in a figurative language. God had shown up as it were to reward His people for no particular reason known to man with miracles, signs and wonders so it seemed. The atmosphere was thick with the presence of the Lord God of Israel. There was great expectation in the ranks and files of the angelic hosts that are billion and billions in attendance. The place was buzzing with the life of God, yet no one lay hold on it.

Why did these people come on this particular day, and not the previous, or the next day? Why this day in the history of the people of God? What was so unique about this day that it was specifically stated that the power of the Lord was present to heal the crowd? God’s intension was to pour out His Spirit in healing power, but man’s intension was to sabotage the will of God. It is always like this amongst mankind save a few.

The scriptures stated that the entire council of the Pharisees, Sadducees and the doctors of the Law were there, waiting. These were the political and religious kahuna of the nation of Israel. They came from out of every town in Galilee, Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. It is amazing to know the reason why people go to places; especially to places that are designated as worship centers and auditorium for larger than life personnel to hear a high power speaker. People go to these places for different reasons.

Some go to get healed, while others go to see people who will get healed, but some go specifically to poke holes in the speech of the man, or woman of God. They go to discourage others and act as dogs in a manger. They are not going in, but discourage those who are trying to go in to the folds of the Lord.

A remarkable scene took place outside the crowd, and a man who was confirmed to his bed by paralysis, was brought by four men to see Christ. They tried to push their way through on account of their friend, but they could not, because of the press. The crowd can be an agent of blessings, or hindrance and limitation. It can facilitate the spiritual chemical reaction, or stand in opposition to the will of God. Four friends, and a sick man needed to meet Jesus, but the crowd was an agent of hindrance and opposition. In your case, there may not be a crowd, but something or someone may be the obstacle.

When the friends brought this man to see Jesus Christ, they sought out for a means to bring their friend to Christ, but they hit a wall, and could not reach their goal. Their effort was negated, frustrated, prevented and opposed. Suddenly an idea came into the mind of one of the friends of the sick man. He told his friends that there was a way out of the dilemma that confronted them, and it was to go through the steps to the roof of the house and uncover the tiles.

They went up through the steps to the roof and uncovered the tiles on their way to Jesus Christ. They had already met with some challenges earlier with the crow, and now they faced even bigger ones. Four men carrying a sick man and winding through the stairway leading to the roof of a house was a serious challenge.

You will meet challenges in life, and some of them will be Everest in nature, while others will be a piece of cake to overcome. Nevertheless, there are obstacles, barriers, dangers, hardships and difficulties in life whenever we move forward. Are we going to tuck our tails between the legs and run for cover at the revelation of each barrier and obstacle, whether positive or negative?

The five men knew why they were there, and no mountain as high as an Everest could keep them from reaching their goal of standing before Jesus Christ. Are you sick in your body? Do you have mental problems? Are you facing terminal issues in your life? Is this problem your son or daughter, and you are seeking for an answer on their behalf?

What are the obstacles to your faith? Can you find a way to get this need met? Are there physical and spiritual giants on your way, preventing you to reach your destination? What are you going to do? In the scriptures, king David encouraged himself in the Lord when he faced one of those mighty obstacles. (1Sam.30:6) In your desperation, call upon the name of the Lord and He will show you how to circumvent the obstacles, crowd and mountains, and go through the stairways to the roof to uncover the tiles and let down your friend before Christ.

When your faith in God is at work, the crowd, the enemy, obstacles and opposition will make a way for you, who once barricaded the way. The scriptures say, “When a man ways please the Lord, He will make even his enemies to be at peace with him.” (Prov.16:7) Nothing is impossible to your God, and even so, nothing shall be impossible to you saints, because your trust is not in man, but God, with whom all things are possible. Look to Him in all of your challenges, because the power of God is present to do what man has called impossible.

Imagine the crowd that came from all over Jewry: the lawyers, doctors, politicians, Sadducees, Pharisees, and the general populace. Their negative faith could not touch Christ, let alone receive some blessings from Him, even though the power of God was present to heal them. If you let the crowd get into your head, it will kill your dreams and they will never be realized. When you look away from man, doctors, psychiatrist, psychologist and all the negative words of mankind, concerning your situation, and they have all failed, God will take up your case, because your faith has anchored in Him.

Christ saw the faith of the sick man including his four friends who cut through the roof of the house where He was. He saw in their actions an element that negated the crowd, and introduced some unconventional methods in how to reach Him. He was impressed. Would the owner of the house bring litigation against these five men? We cannot tell, but they accomplished why they left their homes, carrying their friend in a crouch. The man with the palsy got off his bed, and he was made every whit whole.

Now the writer can hear you saying, “What about the lawyers, doctors, Pharisees, Sadducees, the politicians, the religious people who came from everywhere to hear Him”? What about them the author says? There were only five men including the sick who had enough faith to touch the helm of His garment. They drew out from Christ this available and present power of God, and received the answer to their need. The anointing of God brought joy to these five men, particularly their friend the man who was sick of palsy.

The doctors of the Law, Pharisees, Sadducees, and all the people came for something else different from God’s agenda. They were concerned about the Law and the doctrines of man, and not their relationship to God. They missed the opportunity to get right with God through the only One qualified to give them the ability to be free of sins and sickness.

They were forcing and fuming about words and theology, and they missed Christ right before their eyes. They made a mountain out of a mole’s hill, and said, “Who is this that speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sin, but God alone?” They ignored, communized and defiled the very One sent by the God to them. They claimed that only God could forgive sins, but they were oblivious of the God that had ordained His Son with the power and authority to forgive sins and heal their broken bodies. They did not accept that Christ could both purify their hearts from sin and heal their bodies of sicknesses and diseases. They lost the battle as well as the war, and were forever the slaves of sin.

Christ read their hearts like a book, and He was able to tell what was in them. He said to them, “What are you reasoning in your hearts?” Which is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven you; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power upon the earth to forgive sins, I say unto you, arise, and take up your couch, and go into your house.”

The man rose up before them, and took up his couch, and departed to his own house, praising God as he went. Needless to say that the whole crowd was on fire and beside itself, giving praises to God, the Almighty. Many are called, but few are chosen. Are you one of the few that the Lord has chosen? I cannot answer this question for you, but you can answer it for yourself.
