Jesus Christ said, “Rather blessed are those who hear and keep the word of the Lord.” The occasion for the powerful statement from the lips of the Lord Jesus Christ came as a result of a woman declaring with a loud voice that the mother of the Jesus Christ, who cared for and fed Him was blessed of all women in keeping with word of the archangel Gabriel, who announced His birth. (Luke.1:28, 11:27)
The archangel Gabriel and the Lord Jesus Christ both carried the word of God, but the Son is superior to the angel, and the word He carried is of a greater value than the angel. It came to pass, as Jesus was done speaking the things in Luke 11 concerning the Kingdom of God and us, a woman shouted out in the midst of the crowd, “Blessed is the woman that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked.”
Jesus Christ replied and said, “Yes, rather, blessed, are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” By this statement, the Lord elevated those who hear and keep the word of God above His mother. This is a significant twist in the relationship between Christ and the redeemed as the word of God through Him carried more weight.
As we continue, it is necessary to consider the two words used above. The first one is “hear” and the second is “keep.” They are both active words, and one cannot hear and keep, without doing something. The words are not passive and call for interaction between the hearers and the keepers of it.
The Greek word used here is “akouo” which means to hear with or without understanding. In Acts.9:4 and 7, the two meaning of the word were used. Paul heard with understanding and his companions heard without understanding. If you hear the word of God without understanding, the birds of the air will come and dislodge it from your heart. (Matt.13:19) We must engage our inner ear and be committed to what we are hearing by interacting with it. If we do not, then, the word is snatched away from our hearts and then it will be unfruitful.
The second word “keep” is a military word where the soldier guards and watches over what has been assigned to him. This is where we get the word “keep”. We must guard the word of God in our hearts, and prepare a throne for it. We have to make for it a hiding place where the word can grow and reproduce into 30, 60 and 100 fold. It involves much work and care. Those who are lazy will not keep the word of God in their hearts, and therefore, there will not be a harvest to garner. So when the Lord said that the ones who are hearing His word and keep it are rather blessed above Mary, His mother, He meant it.
Now let us return to the text, picking it up at where the woman cried our with a loud voice, saying, “Blessed is the womb that bear thee, and the breasts that fed thee.” The mother of the Lord was highly favored and blessed by the words of archangel Gabriel, who was sent from heaven to Mary, the mother of the Lord, according to Luke.1:28. The angel Gabriel said, “Hail, you are highly favored, and the Lord God is with you; and blessed are you amongst women.”
There is an honor bestowed upon Mary, the mother of our Savior, the Redeemer of the whole humanity, the race of Adam. As soon as Mary received the word into her spirit, life began to take form within her womb. The Seed of the Word of God brought by the angel grew into the Man-God in form of a baby. Within nine months of gestation, Jesus Christ was born according to the word brought by the angel from God. The word became flesh and dwelt amongst us for thirty-three and half years.
Today, even so will His word in your heart (spirit) become flesh and take on whatever the word has been spoken into your heart. The spiritual renovation by the Spirit of God has begun as the word has already taken root in you. Like begets like, even so will the word of God beget God Himself in you, and the manifestation will soon appear for all to see.
With the word in you, and according to the regenerating ability of His Spirit, bareness will give way to fruitfulness, unemployment to employment, sickness in the body to health, invading your cells, mental insanity to sound mind. (Mk.5:15c)
It is a unique thing amongst humanity that if any heart will receive the seed of the word of God, and will keep it, it will reproduce God in that heart, and will change the darkness into light, and causes the impossible to become possible. Although this woman was speaking the truth of the word of God, but Jesus had greater truth beyond that which was given by the Father, and through the lips of an angel. The Lord Jesus Christ said and this also came from His Father. “Yes, rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
You must hear the word of God wherever you are in this world, and it is up to you what you do with it. You must keep it in your heart in a fertile ground that has been harrowed and prepared for the seed of God. It must reproduce after the kind of God, and bring the desired end. Hearing and keeping the word will lead to the favor of the Lord, and it has to complement and attest the seed. The word goes through your outer ear lobe, and then settles down into your spirit that has been prepared. It has been hallowed and cultivated with patience. Therefore, it will produce the result of righteousness that will bring glory to the living God, and His Son, Jesus Christ. Why? The word that proceeds from the mouth of God shall not return void, but it shall prosper in the things where to He sent it.” (Isa.55:11)
The word of God will always prosper, and there is never a shadow of turning in its direction. Even so, Jesus Christ said, “The word of God will prosper, and the heart that receives and keeps it shall be blessed.” Every word of God sown into that heart that has been cleansed will not return void. It shall definitely prosper in the things whereto the Lord has sent them.
The prosperity of the word is in the speaking of it out of our hearts through our lips and tongues. Your mouth that is made up of tongue and lips are the triggers, and they speak what the Lord has already spoken. According to Lk.8:5 and Matt.13:23, the seed in the good ground, produces 30, 60 and 100 a hundred fold. It is impossible for the heart that has the word, and keeps it to be unproductive. God is the Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Heb.11:6)
If you have a home for the word of God, and you hear His word and keep it, you will be the most envied amongst man and humanity in general. Jesus Christ placed you above His mother, and we ought to think about that a lot. This guarantees the blessings of the almighty God as a hearer, keeper and doer of His word. (Jms.1:22-25) This is how important the word of God is amongst humanity.
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. (Matt.4:4) Physical existence and things like food, clothing and all that is associated with them are not the most important things in life. The agenda of God is, and consequently, it is the spiritual and not the physical that carries the uttermost weight in life.
If your word is the word of God, and it is proceeding from your spirit via your mouth, it shall also prosper, and will not be void amongst men, demons and angels. So, let your heart and mind be renovated and changed by the word of God. Allow the word of God to renew your mind by the Spirit of God.
The impossible will become possible, and the unseen will be seen, and your earth will give way to an open heaven. The word of the Lord will prosper within the heart that hears and keeps it. Such a heart will be blessed above Mary, the mother of Christ. (Luke.11:27-28) So when you are confronted with any situation, let the word of God within you rise up, and allow your tongue and lips to speak out the word of God. You shall have victory, and you will glorify the Lord.
