1Cor.1:1-2:31

Holy Spirit Is Essential To Mankind

The Lord God, Almighty opposes the ways of mankind and as He said in Isa.55:6-7, “My ways are not your ways neither are my thoughts your thoughts.” When mankind fell in Adam, the spirit of God exited from man and he had to feign for himself for living in all the areas of life until the fullness of time when the He changed all things by sending His Son, Jesus Christ to die, give His life and shed His blood so that His glory will rest upon mankind through the Gospel of His grace. If mankind will believe in Him, the wrath of God will pass over him just as gazing upon the blood of the Lamb on the doors made the angel of death pass over the Hebrews in Egypt, ending their slavery and bondage.

But before this time approached, God is diametrically opposed to the ways of mankind in the ways they do things on the earth. If anyone wants to succeed in life in the ways God sees success, he will have to do things the way God does them through His spirit. The spirit of God is necessary to a man becoming a child of God. Jesus Christ began man’s reformation and to Him was given the Holy Spirit of God without measure to fulfill all that God had desired.

God said that He would destroy the wisdom of the wise and He will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness, but unto us which are being saved, it is the Power of God. (vv.18-19) Paul said earlier in in v.17, that Christ sent him not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. The wise and the prudent of this world are nothing before the Lord our God however high and lofty they may be.

Pride is the barge of Satan and those who share in it are doomed to suffer the same fate like him. The wisdom, knowledge, strength and might generated by mankind are inferior to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. So God said in His wisdom where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? (v.20) Has not God made foolish the wisdom of mankind whom He has allowed to live on the planet earth? They are nothing, but lower than zero in His sight. The wisdom of men is made foolishness by God as David prayed that the Lord God should turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. (2Sam.15:31 and 16:20).

Mankind cannot stand toe to toe in wisdom before the Lord God of heaven. He used the apparently foolishness of preaching the Gospel to save those who acknowledged the Gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ which the rest of mankind has labeled foolishness. How wonderful are His ways and His judgment past finding out. (v.21) The world could not understand the wisdom of God by its own wisdom, but God through that which was called foolishness by the preaching of the Gospel, saved the ones who admitted that they were foolish and God was right and wise.

The Jews sought for a sign and the Gentiles in mankind sought for wisdom respectively, but God in His infinite wisdom separated from man’s, entered into the world of men and delivered them through Jesus Christ because they believed in Him. (v.22)

But God has ordained that the Gospel should be preached in Christ as being crucified and this represented for the Jews a stumbling block and the Greeks foolishness. But all who will believe this Gospel of God in Christ will be saved. (v.23) Those who believed and are the called of God will be saved, whether they be Jews or Gentiles. It makes no difference! Jesus Christ has become unto them the Power, Wisdom and the might of God. They are more than conquerors through Christ their Redeemer and Lord. They are to live their lives through and under the might of God who has become all in all to them.

The foolishness of God called so by the world is wiser than the wisdom of man put together and the weakness of God called so by the world is stronger than the strength of the world combined. Man is mistaken as to his reference and cognizance to the things of this present evil world. He will never get his bearing correct until he turns to the Lord and allows the Gospel to change his mind and view. (v.25)

The Kingdom of God is not buzzing with multitude of powerful, rich, intelligent, wise and prudent people and they are not pressing in either. Not that they are not wanted in the Kingdom, but the things they have acquired like wealth, riches, power, might and prestige will be the obstacles to them. If they must enter, they will have to undress themselves of those things. The Kingdom of God is not meat, drink, clothes, gold, diamond or the riches of this world. (v.26)

God is calling the nobodies, the riff rats, the debased, the common and all the low levels of mankind to Himself and His Kingdom. God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise and has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the mighty. He has chosen the base things of the world, yes, and things which are not, to bring to nought the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. (vv.27-29)

The wisdom and power of the Lord are beyond all of humanity put together and we find it very refreshing in a world that thinks all that glitters is gold. If we want to be wise, we must become foolish, if we want to be strong, we must become weak and if we want to be knowledgeable, we must truly know Him who counted it as nothing to be equaled with God. (Phip.2:4-8)

God has taken the based things, the forsaken things and the despised, the common things of the world has He chosen, even the things that are not to expose the things that are mighty and esteem by the world, bringing them all to nothing before Him. So there is no boasting before Him and there is no pounding of the chest at His presence as though we got it all of our own selves.

The scripture made us to understand that no man, however important or high he may be in the eyes of the world, should glory in the presence of God. God destroys and evaporates the pride of humanity just as He did to Satan. We are of God in Christ of whom He has made unto us wisdom, righteousness, justification and redemption. Those who trusted and acknowledged Christ and believed in the testimony of God concerning His Son, Jesus Christ are made wisdom and strength unto Him.

The message that began in chapter 1 in the impartation of the divine wisdom to the man who acknowledges Christ in God, was brought to the height regarding how we have these wisdom, power and prudence of the Lord as opposed to the perishing wisdom of mankind in this world. God wants mankind to know that without His spirit, mankind is chasing the wind and trying to cache shadows of the might and prudence in the world of mankind. The spirit of God is the mind of Christ and since the saints have the same spirit, they have the mind of Christ. His mind is superior to the mind of the world combined. If you want the wisdom, power, might, prudence and the ability of God, it is incumbent on you to have the spirit of the Lord.

Paul was a bit surprised that all of Athens was given up to idolatry and superstition and they spent their time arguing and disputing about words. Wisdom, science and philosophy were their games and they had different parties like the Epicureans and the Stoics to mention a few. (Acts.17:18) The news about Paul got to them and they said of him, “What will this babbler say?” They spent their time in nothing else, but to tell or hear of some new things and they gave him audience on Mars Hill. (Acts.17:18-22)

The Jews on the other hand wanted proofs and signs of the reality things and God. Although they had the works of God in their midst, they could not see them because their eyes were veiled. Paul declared before the sages and philosophers of mankind that they could not handle the foolishness of God, let alone His wisdom. If the world could not deal with God’s foolishness, how then could they approach the wisdom of God?

Since the wisdom of God was directly connected to His spirit and that mankind did not care about His spirit, mankind would always be in darkness as to the true wisdom, might and the prudence of the Lord. Paul knowing the spiritual culture of the Athenians, he did not come to them with the excellency of speech, wisdom, might or prudence declaring unto them the testimony of God. (1Cor.2:1)

Mankind is opened to debates and disputes about nothing, but in proving that their stuffs are better than your stuffs and wiser, greater than the other. Paul’s objective was to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified because it would take the spirit of God to convince them otherwise. (v.2) Knowing who they were, he treaded carefully and he was in weakness, fear and much trembling. His speech and preaching were not with enticing words like mankind in the Gentiles and man’s wisdom. He came to them in the spirit of the Lord, demonstrating the spirit’s power and not the wisdom of men. (v.4) The reason for his choice of words was that the faith of the Athenians should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God through the spirit.

In case mankind has forgotten, true wisdom, might and prudence are from the Lord and the saints through the spirit of the Lord do exercise them. The saints of God do speak wisdom among them that are perfect, yet not the wisdom of mankind or of this world that is shrouded in debates, confusion and eventually death. The scripture says, “There is a way that appears right and wise unto men, but the end of it is death. (Prov.14:12)

If mankind seeks after its own wisdom and might, he will find them, but the outcome will not be good, but negative. However, the saints of God do speak wisdom given by the Holy Spirit in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom that God had ordained before the world began unto His glory. (v.7) None of the princes, the kings, queens, emperors, presidents, prime ministers and the intelligential of this world had the knowledge of this wisdom of God. If they had known His wisdom, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (v.8) God would have still found a way to send Christ to our planet.

The wisdom of God is not access by or through the wisdom of mankind, but by the spirit of the Lord. No man by his wisdom can find God because death cannot find life. The entire world of seven billion plus are in the grip of Satan and of the power of darkness. It will take the revelation of His spirit to break through the darkness of this world and of mankind.

The things, words, wisdom, might and prudence that were and are available to the saints of God are deployed by the spirit of the Lord and the eyes, ears and hearts of mankind have not known them. Eye has not seen, nor ear heard and neither has entered into the heart of man, the glorious, wonderful and marvelous things God had prepared for them that loved Him. The segments of humanity who have acknowledged His Son, Jesus Christ are in for a ride of their life. (v.9)

The wisdom, might, prudence and the things like that are revealed unto us by the spirit of God. (v.10) These things like the depth of God are exposed and searched for only by and through His spirit, even the deep things of God. A man’s spirit knows all there is to know about him and there is no one that knows a man like the spirit inside of him. Even so, the things of God know no man, except by the spirit of God who is in Him. (v.11) When it comes to the wisdom, might, prudence, knowledge and all that are in God, we need His spirit to reveal them to us and they cannot be discovered by mankind’s intellectual ability, wisdom, might and prudence.

We have received not the spirit of the world that will end up  in confusion, darkness and death, but the spirit of God in order that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God Himself through His spirit. (v.12) As long as man is connected to the spirit of God, he will always have a flow of wisdom, revelation, knowledge, might and prudence, but when he thinks that he did not need Him, his fall will begin to a lower level than hell itself.
